A bingo player from the North East is celebrating in a big way after winning a massive prize at Mecca Bingo Stockton during the bank holiday weekend towards the end of May.
On Sunday, May 25, a fortunate bingo player hit the £50,000 jackpot while taking part in the National Bingo Game. The winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, is known to be a regular at the Chandlers Wharf venue.
To win the top prize, the player had to complete a “full house” within the first 16 numbers called. Tony Shannon, the caller during the game, spoke about the moment the win happened:
“When the customer claimed, everybody in the club fell silent while I checked the ticket. When I confirmed the win, the whole club burst into applause. The only person who wasn’t excited was the winner because she hadn’t realised that she’d triggered the amazing jackpot. When I told her how much she’d won, her hands flew up to her mouth, she was so shocked.”
Having spent 29 years working at Mecca, Tony is no stranger to making people smile.
“So many people hate their work, but I genuinely love mine. I enjoy putting a smile on people’s faces, standing on stage and making people chuckle.”
Tony’s passion for bingo has also become a family affair, with his son Edison recently joining the team. Tony explained:
“He’s desperate to give away the £50,000 jackpot. “When he turned up for shift later that evening, he was delighted for the customer who won, but he was disappointed that he wasn’t the one holding the mic.”
However, there is definitely a chance that Edison may one day announce a big win himself. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Mecca Bingo Stockton is the luckiest branch in the country, with £5.1 million in jackpots awarded in 2024, which is enough to purchase around 30 homes in the area.
Just a few days before the jackpot was won, we wrote about the Stockton bingo caller Jackpot Jess who has been awarding players an average of £66,000 in prize money each week. Impressively, she has called bingo for close to £5 million in prize money and once awarded five jackpot prizes in a single day.
However, Stockton’s good fortune can be traced even further back. It was also named the luckiest venue back in 2022 when £4.5 million was awarded in prize money. That year, the venue awarded close to £85,000 a week.
In fact, if you search online, you will find references to Stockton being the luckiest town for bingo players going much further back. For instance, in October 2020, one headline read “Teesside bingo hall dubbed ‘luckiest in UK’ after celebrating third £50K win since lockdown”.
The article was about three National Bingo Game jackpots won between August 3 and October 12. The venue was able to reopen after the Covid-19 lockdown on July 4 and had handed out £1.2 million in prize money by the middle of October.
Therefore, while bingo will always be a game of chance, if you’re feeling down on your luck, it may be worth taking a trip to Stockton. Not only could you win a huge jackpot as the bingo player in Mecca Stockton, but you may also become Edison’s first big winner.
