The newly renovated bingo club on Lord Street, located at the corner of Scarisbrick Avenue in the former Lavish Homes unit, is now fully open after its launch on Friday, October 3. The new LOL Bingo in Southport has officially opened its doors. The transformation cost more than £350,000 and has already drawn a great deal of attention. Over 1,000 people registered for the club before its opening day for some good time outside the online bingo sites.
LOL Bingo director Mike Smith personally invested the six-figure sum into the project, which has also created new job opportunities locally. He said:
“There are lots of positive changes happening in the town centre soon, with big investment in the Northern Quarter and Market Quarter and the new Marine Lake Events Centre. I’m determined that LOL Bingo will be a great addition to Lord Street and the wider Southport community.”
The Southport site is the latest in LOL Bingo’s growing chain, which already includes venues in Harpurhey (Manchester) and Wallsend (Newcastle), and the company is planning further expansion throughout the UK.
In the days leading up to the opening, the club’s manager, Jenny Phillips and her team spent time outside chatting with passers-by and assisting people interested in signing up. Jenny said:
“We have had so many lovely comments from people walking past. Everyone’s very curious about what this place is going to be like and what they can expect. The feedback has been brilliant. So many people have missed being able to play bingo since Mecca Bingo on Lord Street closed around the time of the pandemic. But LOL Bingo is investing in its smartest lounge and bringing Bingo back to the town.”
The new club in Southport features a bingo zone that initially seated 24 people but has already expanded to 32 due to demand, and there is the potential for further growth. Excitingly, players can join in games at other LOL Bingo sites in Manchester and Newcastle through an interactive communication system. As Jenny explained before the opening.
“There will be lots to enjoy here. We will have a bingo area, where people will be able to join in with players at our sites in Manchester and Newcastle via an interactive communication hub. This is bingo for the modern age. Rather than being limited to what times you can and can’t come in, we’ll be open from 10am until midnight seven days a week. You’ll be able to come in at a time that suits you and play for as long or as little as you want.”
Beyond bingo, the lounge also houses two interactive dartboards, American pool, a free jukebox, and complimentary tea and coffee for guests.
To help maintain the historic character of Lord Street, LOL Bingo worked with Sefton Council’s conservation team and has deliberately avoided bright neon or flashing lights in its design. Jenny added:
“We love Southport. We’re very much invested in the local community, and we’re really keen to get involved in helping to make Southport a better place. If you’re on Lord Street in the next few days, please come over and say hello. We’d love to meet everyone and let people know what you can look forward to.”
Two former Southport bingo managers were the VIP guests of honour as the new LOL Bingo in Southport was officially declared open.
Derick Moss, who is also the Mayor of Burscough, and John Waby were delighted to cut the ribbon and welcome the first customers to the new entertainment venue. They joined owner Mike Smith, manager Jenny Phillips and their team for the opening festivities.
Visitors were able to enjoy a weekend of Opening Celebrations, which began on Friday and continued through Saturday and Sunday, complete with complimentary fizz on arrival, guided tours of the new space, and free bingo credits. Anyone who visited over the weekend also had the chance to enter a free draw to win a 32” TV.
Owner Mike Smith said:
“What a fabulous few days! We’ve had a great opening with some bingo legends and our first £500 winner. Our spectacular new LOL Bingo lounge has added some real variety and vitality to Lord Street after lots of investment and hard work, transforming two prominent units which had been vacant for several months. We are pleased to have received some superb reviews from our first visitors.
Thank you, Southport – we love you.”
