Players at the Mecca Bingo club in Acocks Green in Birmingham were treated to a surprise visit from drag queen Fatt Butcher, together with a blue alien companion.

Fatt caused quite a stir, and the managers and callers at the club struggled to stay focused on the game as a film crew followed the unexpected visitors around. They were visiting to film a background segment for the ITV singing talent show The Voice, where they are appearing as a contestant.

Fatt’s Talent Show Success

Fatt Butcher and alien sidekick appeared at Mecca club in Acocks Green for the show last Saturday (18 November) and impressed the judges with their rendition of “This Woman’s Work” by Kate Bush.

All four judges turned, with Sir Tom Jones saying, “You have an incredible voice” and Olly Murs adding, “I love how unique you are”. Fatt was also praised by Anne-Marie, who said, “I think you just need to be heard from your voice…that’s the reason why we all turned. And I turned so quickly because I could hear every note was perfect.”

During their appearance on the show, Fatt also explained that the stage name is a tribute to the EastEnders character Pat Butcher. They added:

“I’ve been called fat my whole life…this is very much an extension of myself…I’ve taken something I’ve been called my whole life and turned that into something everyone knows me for.”

Speaking about why they wanted to go on the show, they said it was in order to “Put my voice out there front and centre” and added, “I want people to consider me a singer.”

Mecca Bingo Appearance Kept Secret for 12 Months

Drag queen Fatt appeared at the Acocks Green bingo hall in November 2022, and the staff and players had to keep it a secret for an entire year.

Fatt, who is a bingo lover, arrived at the club with friends, and the game was run by Toni Cooper, the club’s assistant manager. Speaking afterwards, Toni said:

“It was great fun. The filming had been arranged but the crew hadn’t shared any details of the act they were recording, so it was a big surprise when Fatt arrived with their entourage, including a blue alien! It was hard to keep our eyes down for the bingo with Fatt and their friends in the club. But at Mecca Bingo we’re used to giving away big money and we’re hoping our customers’ recent luck rubs off on Fatt – we’re backing them all the way to the final!”

If Fatt goes on to win The Voice, they will receive a recording contract with Universal Records, a gigantic £50,000 cash prize, and a luxury holiday. The Voice Last year’s winner, Anthonia Edwards, was on Sir Tom Jones’s team.

Plenty More to Enjoy at Acocks Green

You don’t have to appear on a televised talent show to be in with the chance of a big prize. There are plenty of chances to win big just by playing bingo. For instance, in August, a player at the Acocks Bingo club won a £54,000 jackpot; in October, another player won £40,000. They may well have been singing afterwards, but they didn’t have to sing a note to hit the big prizes.

No matter where you are in the country, you’re unlikely to be very far from a Mecca Bingo club and all of them host regular events with huge prizes up for grabs. You can take part in the National Bingo Game, attend a drag bingo night, take part in the Bonkers Bingo events, and much more.

If you’re not near a Mecca club, there is no need to despair. The Mecca Bingo website is packed with action. There are rooms open around the clock, cheap tickets, huge prizes, and a buzzing atmosphere. Your visit certainly won’t be a drag and you’ll be treated like a royalty from beginning to end.
