In good news for residents of the Breckland district of Norfolk, there will be a new bingo hall in Watton after plans were approved to convert a former café on the town’s High Street.

Dennis Brooks has been granted planning permission to change the use of the property, which is in a central location close to other businesses and services. According to the planning application, no alterations will be made to the Grade II listed building or its existing interior layout.

No opening date has been confirmed, and the planning documents do not appear to give any details about how the bingo hall will operate. However, the approval does mean that Watton is now one step closer to having its own dedicated bingo venue.

It’s quite common for buildings to be converted into bingo venues. For example, last year a Sheffield bank was transformed into a bingo hall.

Former Café Set to Become Bingo Hall

The new bingo hall is planned for a former café on Watton High Street. The building’s central location should make it easy to reach for local players, and the application described the property as being in a “prominent central location” within an established town centre community.

The fact that no major alterations are planned should also help keep the project straightforward. As the building is Grade II listed, any changes would need to be handled carefully, so using the existing layout should make things easier.

At this stage, further details about the venue have not yet been released. It is not clear what days the hall will open, how many sessions it will offer, or whether there will be any food, drink, or entertainment alongside the bingo. However, more details are sure to emerge in the coming weeks and months.

Watton Already Has Regular Bingo Sessions

While residents of Watton wait for the new venue to open, there are some other options for bingo fans in the area.

Bingo is already played at Watton’s Queen’s Hall, where weekly activities include bingo every Monday at 7pm.

However, a dedicated bingo hall will be something new and different for the town. Community halls and sports centres are useful places for regular sessions. Still, a venue built around bingo will provide a more immersive and focused experience, which his sure to appeal to those who already enjoy the game locally, especially those who currently have to wait for weekly sessions or travel elsewhere for a bingo hall experience.

A New Use for a High Street Building

The approval of the new bingo hall in Watton will also bring a former café back into use in the centre of town. High streets across the UK have seen a decline in recent years and are struggling to remain relevant, and a new leisure venue can help to bring new life to the area. A bingo hall could attract people during the day or evening, depending on how the venue chooses to run its sessions. It may also support nearby businesses if players visit shops, cafés, takeaways, or pubs before or after games.

Of course, it is still too early to say exactly how the new hall will operate, but it does give reason to be optimistic about the future of the town centre. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see how the Grade II listed building will be adapted to its new purpose, giving bingo players even more to look forward to.
