Are you a regular player at your local bingo club? Are you part of a large group that plays regularly? Perhaps there’s a famous venue nearby known for its lively atmosphere, or there often seem to be big winners from your area. If you’ve ever wondered in which parts of the UK bingo is most popular, then read on and all will be revealed.
There are a number of ways of determining a town’s love of bingo and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. However, one fairly reliable way of doing so is by looking at online search data. Some research using this approach was recently commissioned and it looked at the frequency of the top 10 bingo-related search queries in 60 UK towns and cities.
This analysis found that Wrexham is the UK’s ultimate bingo city. The Welsh city sees an average of 12,133 monthly bingo searches, which is truly impressive given its population of just 135,132. Astonishingly, this means that around one in every five residents searches online for bingo monthly, which is a clear indication of the city’s love for the game.
Hull came in second place. It boasts a population of 261,149 and an average monthly bingo search count of 45,677. That means approximately one in six residents actively seeks bingo-related information online. Hull is also home to five excellent venues in its city centre alone, so if you are looking for a bingo-themed getaway, then Hull is worth serious consideration.
Blackpool also stands out with 21,453 monthly bingo searches from its 140,954 residents. The coastal town is perhaps best known for its tower, but as a seaside resort it, of course, has a longstanding association with bingo. Not long ago, a brand new Club 3000 Bingo Blackpool had a grand opening, showing that there is still plenty of room for bingo growth by the sea.
As mentioned, there are advantages and disadvantages to the different methods of examining bingo’s popularity and another method worth looking at is the number of operational venues per person. Bingo halls have been faced with numerous challenges over the last few decades, such as the 2007 smoking ban, the growth in online gaming, the pandemic, and the challenging economic climate. This has resulted in the closure of a huge number of bingo halls, from over 1,500 venues to around 350 today.
However, several regions still thrive. Lanarkshire in Scotland ranks first for venues per capita, with 18 venues to serve approximately 52,583 people each.
Next on the list is the combined region of Tyne & Wear and County Durham. With 28 bingo venues serving a population of 1.66 million, there’s roughly one hall for every 59,394 residents.
Merseyside follows, proving the North’s passion for bingo. With 17 venues across its 1.42 million residents, there’s approximately one bingo hall per 83,705 people.
Hearing stories of local winners often inspires people to visit their local club and try their luck. Therefore, it is no surprise that there has been some research into the luckiest bingo towns in the UK. In 2022, Paddy Power Bingo carried out a study of millions of games to find the luckiest UK towns based on player win rates.
At the top of the luck scoreboard was Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, which had a truly impressive 31% win rate. Trailing just behind, tied for second, were Lymington in Hampshire and Isleworth in London, both with a 21% win rate, and putting to bed the myth of the north-sound bingo divide.
Other lucky spots included Melksham in Wiltshire with a 20% win rate, followed closely by Maesteg in Wales and Wadebridge in Cornwall, each with a 19% success rate.
Don’t worry if your town hasn’t featured in the above. The best thing you can do is to keep playing, and with a bit of luck, you’ll win and boost your town up the rankings.
