Listen to this article:A mum of two from Huddersfield is celebrating after she won £50,000 during her first ever visit to Mecca Bingo. The Mecca Bingo Huddersfield win happened on Friday, 27 March, and it came after a last-minute decision to swap a night in town for a cheaper evening at bingo.
According to Mecca Bingo, the winner had never played bingo before. In fact, she said she was not even paying attention to the prize pots when the numbers were being called because the food had just arrived.
She explained what happened, saying:
“We abandoned our original plan for a night on the town in favour of a cheaper and, what we thought would be, a quieter night out. It was my first ever time playing bingo, and the food we’d ordered had just arrived, so I wasn’t even paying attention to the prize pots,” she laughed.
“The numbers came out so fast, and when I dabbed off the last one on my ticket, I thought, ‘Ooh, I’ve won something,’ but I couldn’t believe it when my friend mouthed, ‘OMG, you’ve just won fifty grand!’. I genuinely thought she meant £50 – I wondered why everyone around me was so happy, cheering and congratulating me!”
As is the case with many big jackpot winners, the woman was playing the National Bingo Game. The National Bingo Game is played at participating clubs across Britain and gives players the chance to win linked jackpots on top of the usual club prize. Tickets start from £1 for two tickets, and the jackpot level depends on how quickly a player completes a full house. A full house in 24 numbers or fewer wins £100, in 20 numbers or fewer wins £1,000, in 16 numbers or fewer wins £50,000, and in 14 numbers or fewer wins the top £250,000 prize. Any national jackpot is paid in addition to the club prize.
That means the Huddersfield winner completed a full house within the first 16 numbers called. The National Bingo Game Winners Wall confirms that a £50,000 jackpot was won at Mecca Bingo Huddersfield on 27 March 2026.
Mecca Huddersfield’s Annie Hudson described the moment the claim was checked. She said:
“The caller had only announced fifteen numbers when I heard the player shout. The room fell silent while I checked her claim and then exploded into cheers when I announced that she was going home with £50,000!”
She added that it was the biggest win she had validated in her three years working at the club. She continued:
We’re always thrilled for our winners, but a £50k National Bingo Game jackpot win is a real cause for celebration – especially when it’s the winners’ first time playing bingo! The atmosphere in club was fantastic.”
This is the kind of story on which the bingo community thrives, and the winner said that the reaction from the room was one of the best parts of the experience. She said that everyone around her was congratulating her even though they had never met before. She later said: “The bingo community is amazing – so happy and welcoming. I’ll definitely be back; it’s a great night out.”
While it is not easy to win the top prize playing the National Bingo Game, it certainly isn’t impossible. A quick glance at the Winners Wall on the National Bingo Game website shows that there have been several £50,000 jackpots already this year, along with two £250,000 wins in February and April.
The Mecca Bingo Huddersfield winner has said she plans to treat her family and use the rest of the money to help start her own business, which is a pretty good return from a first trip to bingo and will hopefully inspire others to make their first visits to their local bingo clubs.
