A Leicester bingo player is celebrating after winning an incredible £250,000 jackpot at Mecca Bingo.
The winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, landed the prize while playing the National Bingo Game at the Aylestone Road club in Leicester last month. However, they will not be keeping the full amount for themselves.
Having been introduced to bingo by a close friend many years ago, the pair have been visiting clubs together ever since. Over time, they came to the agreement that whenever one of them won, they would share the prize. Therefore, when the lucky jackpot player at Mecca Bingo Leicester completed a full house within the first 14 numbers called, there was never any question about splitting the £250,000 jackpot.
Following the win, the winner said: “We were so grateful for all the love and congratulations from other customers. It still hasn’t sunk in.”
The £250,000 win came during a National Bingo Game session at Mecca Bingo Leicester, with the huge jackpot triggered by the player matching every number on their ticket within 14 calls, an incredibly rare feat.
Scott Backus, who was hosting the game on the night, said:
“I was calling the National Bingo Game as normal, and everything felt routine. Then, on the 14th number, I heard someone shout. The whole room suddenly went quiet while we checked the claim, and as soon as it was confirmed, the club absolutely erupted.
“At first, the winner couldn’t believe it – he was completely stunned, and so was I! Being able to announce a £250,000 jackpot winner was an incredible moment. I was genuinely shaking.”
The National Bingo Game is played at participating bingo clubs across Great Britain and gives players the chance to win large jackpot prizes alongside the usual club prize.
Players can buy two tickets for £1 or five tickets for £2.50. The game is played for a full house only, and every participating bingo club guarantees a club prize for each game. The jackpot amount won depends on how quickly a player manages to call full house. A full house in 24 numbers or fewer wins £100, while calling a house in 20 numbers or fewer secures a £1,000 prize.
The next jackpot level is £50,000, which is awarded for a full house in 16 numbers or fewer. As mentioned, to win the £250,000 jackpot, a player must complete their ticket within the first 14 numbers called.
The game runs twice a day at participating clubs, every day of the year except for Christmas Day. Therefore, there are plenty of chances to take part, although winning the top prize is clearly far from easy.
The £250,000 National Bingo Game jackpot was introduced in February 2026. The first winner of the new top prize was a player at Club 3000 Bingo in Wigan, who landed the jackpot while enjoying a regular night out with her daughter.
Andrew Smith, general manager at Mecca Bingo Leicester, said:
“We are so thrilled to see these two players take home the jackpot – they are best mates and share all their winnings. They’re such well-liked members of the club, so everyone is so pleased for them, and we hope they have an amazing time enjoying their winnings with their loved ones.”
The jackpot player at Mecca Bingo Leicester and their friend are well-known at the Leicester club, having attended together for many years. They reportedly enjoy bingo as much for the social side of the game as for the chance to win. It is thought that the two are now planning a family holiday with some of the money as a way of celebrating their huge win.
